American Repertory Theater Upgrades its Audio System

American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge, MA recently acquired an extensive Meyer Sound system consisting of a D-Mitri digital audio platform and a complement of 88 self-powered loudspeakers, including new LINA™ line arrays and an immersive surround setup incorporating proprietary IntelligentDC™ technology. A.R.T.'s Sound Manager Sam Lerner walks us through the new audio equipment.

Making Opera: The Designer, Es Devlin

Here’s an interview with designer Es Devlin on her designs for opera. This film is from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s exhibition, Opera: Passion, Power and Politics that runs through Sunday, February 25th.

By creating a state of 'newness' through unfamiliar moving sculpture and light, Devlin, encourages the audience to "pay attention" and "attend to the music". Her designs for opera always start with an intense period of studying the music and understanding how the words work with it. Devlin then breaks the opera down into sections on timelines that she can begin to paint and sketch.

Built in 1938, Augusta, Georgia’s Miller Theater represented the state-of-the-art in cinema and vaudeville for over 40 years. An economic downturn in the ’80s eventually shuttered the theater and it lay silent and dark for more than three decades. Today, however, following a $25 million, seven-year restoration project, the venue has finally reopened, with a mission to present a variety of productions.

The Makeup Lab is a new addition to USITT’s annual Conference. This makeup lab is presented by Cirque du Soleil’s, Randy Handley, Head of Wardrobe, Makeup, and Wigs – Michael Jackson ONE. In this 2-hour, hands-on class, 22 people will be taught the intricacies and specialized techniques used in Cirque productions. Spots for the free class are limited and will fill up quickly.
