Here's a video from The Metropolitan Opera with Assistant General Manager of Production, John Sellars discussing the inner workings of the Ring’s innovative stage “machine” with host Deborah Voigt. This interview was aired during the March 30 Live in HD transmission.

Not only is there complicated automation to move the "planks" of the machine, but there are 24 stagehands, each responsible for one of the 24 planks in this set. In addition to encoders tracking the movement of the planks via the automation system, this information is also fed to the media servers to track the correct projection mapping onto the stage and set.
