From Regional Theatre to TONY Nominee

More than a few of this season’s TONY® Award nominees for Best Play and Best Musical started with productions at regional or not-for-profit theaters. We thought a little credit was due and a Thank You for supporting the development of innovative new works throughout the regional theater community! Here are the TONY nominated productions that were developed on stages across the country before they hit Broadway.

Written by Lucas Hnath, A Doll's House Part 2 was commissioned by South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California where it had a world premiere production in April 2017.

Co-created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and written by Paula Vogel, Indecent was commissioned by Yale Repertory Theatre and American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It had world premiere productions at Yale Repertory Theatre in October 2015 and at the La Jolla Playhouse in November 2015. It also had an Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre in May 2016.

Written by J. T. Rogers, Oslo premiered Off-Broadway in June 2016 at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, a not-for-profit theatre. It later transferred within Lincoln Center to the Vivian Beaumont, a Broadway house in April 2017.

Written by Lynn Nottage, who won her 2nd Pulitzer Prize for Sweat, the show started first as a series of interviews in 2011 of residents of Reading, PA. Co-commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. It was first produced by OSF in 2015, then at Arena Stage in 2016. In Nov. 2016 it was produced Off-Broadway at the Public Theater before transferring to Broadway.

A musical with book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away was workshopped and first produced at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario in 2012 and 2013. It also had a staged reading at Goodspeed Musicals’ 2013 Festival of New Artists in CT. In 2015 it was co-produced as a full production by La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle Repertory Theatre, playing at both venues. The production moved on to the Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC and Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theatre in 2016 before opening on Broadway in 2017.

Written by Pasek & Paul, with the book by Steven Levenson, Dear Evan Hansen had its world premiere in July 2015 at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC before an Off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre in the spring of 2016 prior to moving to Broadway.

A musical adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace, with music and libretto by Dave Malloy, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 was commissioned, developed  and had its world premiere production in 2012 by Ars Nova, a small not-for-profit Off-Broadway company in NYC. Ars Nova mounted two more stagings of the show in 2013. It was then was presented at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge, MA in 2015.

Written by August Wilson in 1979, Jitney only had its Broadway premiere in 2017. Up until then it was the only one of the 10 ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’ plays not to have a Broadway run. It was first produced at the Allegheny Repertory Theatre, in Pittsburgh, PA in 1982. However, the 1996 Pittsburgh Public Theater production, with re-writes by Wilson, has been considered its professional premiere. Over the last 20 years there have been numerous productions by regional theatres as well as two Off-Broadway runs at both Second Stage Theatre and Union Square Theatre.
