Written by August Wilson in 1979, Jitney only had its Broadway premiere in 2017. Up until then it was the only one of the 10 ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’ plays not to have a Broadway run. It was first produced at the Allegheny Repertory Theatre, in Pittsburgh, PA in 1982. However, the 1996 Pittsburgh Public Theater production, with re-writes by Wilson, has been considered its professional premiere. Over the last 20 years there have been numerous productions by regional theatres as well as two Off-Broadway runs at both Second Stage Theatre and Union Square Theatre.
