Jeff Awards Equity Nominations for Chicago Theater Announced

Twenty-four world premiere plays and musicals seen first by Chicago audiences were among those receiving nominations by The Jeff Awards. A total of 178 nominations were made in 31 categories that honor Chicago Equity theatrical productions that opened between August 1, 2017 and July 31, 2018. This year’s Ceremony celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Jeff Awards.

Multi Tony Award-nominated lighting designer Ben Stanton lit the world premiere of This Ain’t No Disco, a high-energy song and dance musical that recently ran at New York City’s Atlantic Theater Company. In addition to lighting designer, Ben Stanton, the creative team for This Ain’t No Disco included: costume designer, Sarah Laux; sound designer, Emily Lazar; set designer, Jason Sherwood; and projection designer, Aaron Rhyne.

LD Charlie Morgan Jones Creates Atmosphere for 1940s NYC in Street Scene

Stage Directions

Performing arts students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland staged Kurt Weill's Street Scene as their final performance of the year. The American opera, by Weill, Langston Hughes, and Elmer Rice is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Rice, was performed at the New Athenaeum Theatre May 19-25 in Glasgow. The production took the audience back to New York City in the late 1940s during the middle of a heatwave. Freelance Lighting Designer Charlie Morgan Jones describes the production as “one of the best” he’s ever worked on, citing his dream team of his regular collaborator, Director Alexandrea Spencer-Jones and new-to-work-with set designer Adrian Linford. Emerging U.S. Student and Professional Designers Accepted to the 2019 Prague Quadrennial

Stage Directions

Thirty-four emerging student designers and 51 professional designers from the U.S. have been selected to exhibit and feature their work in the 2019 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ), the largest performance design event in the world. The 14th PQ will take place June 6-16, 2019, in Prague. The U.S. exhibition at the PQ is supported, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston, or MATCH, a Houston theater has a mantra of flexibility. MATCH, which opened in late 2015 as a home for Houston’s small and mid-sized arts organizations, is a venue that features four flexible performance spaces able to house a variety of events. A recent installation of High End Systems SolaFrame 750 LED fixtures is helping fulfill the flexible mantra.

Del Hughes Lifetime Achievement Awards

On Monday, September 17, 2018, the Stage Managers’ Association (SMA) will present its annual Del Hughes Lifetime Achievement in the Art of Stage Management Awards to three stage managers from the worlds of Broadway, regional theatre, and dance: Roy Harris, Lyle Raper, and Maxine Glorsky. In addition to the three Lifetime Achievement Awards, the SMA will recognize Peter Sargent of Webster University with a special award for Achievement in Stage Management Education for his work as an educator.
