Center Theatre Group is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Richard E. Sherwood Award. The deadline to submit an application is June 1, 2018. The Sherwood Award is an annual $10,000 prize that supports innovative and adventurous theatre artists and engages them in a professional relationship with Center Theatre Group. The award is presented each year at the Ovation Awards ceremony produced by LA Stage Alliance. Two additional finalists will each receive a $2,000 honorarium.

The Outer Critics Circle, the organization of writers and commentators covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway, have announced its winners for the 2017-18 season. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child tops win list with 6 awards including outstanding set design to Christine Jones; lighting design to Neil Austin; projection design to Finn Ross & Ash Woodward; and sound design to Gareth Fry. My Fair Lady followed with 5 awards including outstanding costume design to Catherine Zuber. SpongeBob SquarePants won 4 Awards, “Angels in AmericaCarousel both came away with 3 awards each.

Renowned costume designer Paul Tazewell, a Tony and Emmy Award-Winning alumnus of UNCSA, has established a merit-based scholarship for undergraduate students of color in the School of Design and Production at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1986. With this gift, Tazewell “hopes to inspire emerging artists of color to follow their dreams and become the next generation of creative innovators.” Tazewell spoke at UNCSA’s 52nd Commencement Ceremony, where he received an honorary doctorate.

The New York Drama Critics' Circle today named Mary Jane by Amy Herzogbest play of the 2017-18 season.  Hangmen by Martin McDonagh was named best foreign play. No award was given for best musical. The selections were made at the organization’s 83rd annual voting meeting. The awards will be presented at a private cocktail reception on Thursday, May 10.
