The H2Hombre: Brave the Elements show in the Ziff Ballet Opera House at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center immerses attendees in a wild show that uses a brilliant light show, electronic music, stunning aerial effects and 6,000 gallons of water being sprayed from all sorts of places. With all that water spraying about, the IP-rating and durability of lighting fixtures are important. To meet these demands, the production team chose Chauvet Professional fixtures.

USITT Gateway Project Seeks Mentees to Increase Diversity in Technical Theatre

In an effort to increase diversity and inclusion in theatrical design fields, USITT’s Gateway Project is seeking applicants for mentorship opportunities at USITT 2015 in Cincinnati. Students and young professionals are encouraged to apply for the program, which will give them free registration to the USITT conference as well as mentorship with current USITT members who share their backgrounds.

Technical Theatre Award Winners Announced

The UK’s Technical Theatre Awards took place Tuesday, Oct. 7, and honored the achievements of the backstage crew with awards in 18 categories across all disciplines of stagecraft, including lighting, sound, stage management and more. The "Douglas Turnbull" Award for Outstanding Achievement in Stage Management went to Sharon Hobden. Kate Griffiths won the "Pigs Might Fly South" Award for Outstanding Achievement in Make-up and Wigs. Complete list of categories, nominees and winners after the jump.

Center Theatre Group Announces 2015 Richard E. Sherwood Award Finalists

Center Theatre Group has named the three finalists for the 2015 Richard E. Sherwood Award, which is designed to “nurture innovative, adventurous theatre artists of promise” with a $10,000 cash grant. The finalists are: Zakiyyah Alexander, a playwright; Sean Cawelti, founding artistic director of Rogue Artists Ensemble, a Los Angeles-based theatre company; and Jenny Foldenauer, a costume designer. The Sherwood Award will be presented at the Ovation Awards ceremony produced by LA Stage Alliance on November 2 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse.

In Memoriam: Marian Seldes

Marian Seldes, a Tony Award winner actor and Broadway icon, died Monday, Oct. 6 after an extended illness. Seldes’ career spanned more than 60 years. She won a Tony for her work in A Delicate Balance and in 2010 she was honored with a Tony Award for lifetime achievement. Her last appearance on Broadway was in 2007 in Terrence McNally’s Deuce. She taught for many years at The Juilliard School and later as an adjunct professor at Fordham University.

ETC LED Luminaires Light Red at Blank Space Theatre

When James Tan designed the lighting for Red in the Esplanade Theatre Studio at Black Space Theatre in Singapore, he chose ETC LED Luminaires because they would be “intense enough and could also change color easily, as the play spanned two years with different seasons and day and night.” Tan used ETC Source Four LED Lustr+ luminaires to create natural looking light as well as two 21-inch ETC Selador Classic Vivid-R LED luminaires to provide brightness and saturated color to enhance the canvas when the two actors painted it together. The show was also programmed on an ETC Ion console.

Knight of Illumination Awards Gala Honors UK Entertainment Lighting Industry

The seventh Knight of Illumination Awards gala was held on Sunday, Oct. 5, to honor outstanding achievements in touring, television and theatre lighting and video design. Andy Purves won the Knight of Illumination Award for Play for his work on The Believers at Theatre Royal Plymouth (and touring) with Adam Silverman winning the KOI award for Urinetown at the St. James Theatre. Ethan Wang won the KOI for projection in the theatre for his contributions to Rice from the Cloud Gate Theatre Dance Theatre of Taiwan. The Enrico Caironi Award For Lifetime Recognition, honoring an individual whom the KOI committee feels has made an outstanding impact on the industry, went to Brian Croft who has worked with with ESP Lighting, RFA Electrosound, Theatre Projects and more and who is also a dedicated supporter of the National Youth Theatre.
