Utah Shakespeare Festival Welcomes Students for 38th Annual Shakespeare Competition

The Utah Shakespeare Festival and Southern Utah University will welcome more than 3,000 students and 118 schools to the 38th annual Shakespeare Competition from Oct. 9-11. Students from across the intermountain west area will compete as actors, dancers, musicians, and theatre technicians before panels of theatre, dance and music professionals in the largest scholastic Shakespeare competition in the country. Competitors range from sixth grade to high school seniors. Each participating school is invited to prepare up to three monologues, two duo/trio scenes, and an ensemble scene, as well as an interpretive dance, minstrel and madrigal music, and several presentations in technical theatre.

Backstage Heritage Collection Aims to Document Technical Theatre History

The Backstage Heritage Collection has launched, with a mission to chart the history of stage lighting and other backstage technologies. They will  comprehensively documenting vintage equipment on-line, gathering together high quality present-day images with original design, promotion and marketing materials and remembrances from those who originally created and used the products in order to create a virtual museum; and, where possible, they hope to preserve equipment by finding people able and willing to give it a safe, accessible home.

Joseph Haj Wins Zelda Fichandler Award

Joseph Haj, producing artistic director at Playmakers Rep in Chapel Hill, N.C. won the 2014 Zelda Fichandler Award from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. The Zelda Fichandler Award honors “an outstanding director or choreographer who is transforming the regional arts landscape through imaginative, brave work in theatre” and comes with a $5,000 prize. The SDC chose Haj thanks to his “exemplary artistry, diverse and exciting programming choices, and deep commitment to the arts in North Carolina.”

USITT a Finalist for 2014 Prudential Leadership Award

USITT is one of three finalists for the 2014 Prudential Leadership Award for Exceptional Non-profit Boards. BoardSource, a national association for non-profit boards, will give the winner $15,000 (along with $3000 for the two honorable mentions). The award honors boards that are seen as models of good leadership. USITT was nominated by consultant Leslie Marqua, who helped USITT’s 32-member board develop their strategic plan.

Rose Brand Offers $10,000 Main Stage Curtain as Prize in Rags to Riches Video Contest

Rose Brand launched a new competition, The Rags to Riches video contest, that challenges theatres to create a short video (under 1 minute) explaining why their stage is most deserving of a new curtain. Videos will be featured on the Rose Brand Pinterest and Vimeo pages and the one with the best combination of creativity and entertainment (as judged by Rose Brand) along with likes, shares and organizational need will win a new main curtain worth up to $10,000 for their theatre. The deadline is Nov. 7, 2014.

Lars Fabian Paape New Senior Research Engineer at LumenRadio

Lars Fabian Paape joined LumenRadio’s R&D team as senior research engineer. Paape has a Masters degree in Mathematics, founded his own consultancy in 1998 and has worked in the field of mass spectrometry ever since. Paape has been working for MA Lighting Technology for more than 10 years, where he developed and maintained the software of the 1st generation 2Port Node and had a strong part on the embedded development in the grandMA2 console series.

Ngo will be responsible for their digital marketing strategy, including website and social medie. Before Apollo, Ngo worked at Lincoln Financial Group for 18 years in various communications and marketing roles. Delagrange will work in partnership with management to ensure effective and efficient purchasing of materials and services. Delagrange worked at Busche CNC as a Materials Supervisor / System Analyst prior to joining Apollo Design and has over 21 years of purchasing experience.

Patrick Finn and Paul Skidmore have returned to J.R. Clancy in its sales and product-development staff. Patrick Finn returns to J.R. Clancy after a stint at Sapsis Rigging. He returns to continue his work in product development while researching new innovations within the entertainment technology field. Skidmore returns after working as national sales manager for Pook Diemont & Ohl, Inc. In his new position at J. R. Clancy as Business Development Manager, Paul’s main focus is on developing strategies to move Clancy forward with its full line of existing and new products, and on developing new markets.
