Arizona Opera’s Color-Filled Riders of the Purple Sage

Michael Eddy

PHOENIX, AZ—The Arizona Opera recently premiered Riders of the Purple Sage at Phoenix Symphony Hall. Supporting the drama on stage and accenting its evocative scenic elements, by Scenic Designer and renowned artist Ed Mell, was a lighting design by Greg Hirsch. His richly colored palette was provided in part by Chauvet COLORado 2-Quad Zoom fixtures supplied by Clearwing Productions of Phoenix. Describing the opera’s set as “a really a large canyon surrounded by walls,” Hirsch emphasized that it was critical that his lighting underscore a feeling of open space within those confines. He also counted on them to add warmth and impact during the opera’s more romantic scenes.

Riders of the Purple Sage marks the first time that Ed Mell brought his iconic American Western art to the stage and in the video below he talks about the experience of bringing his work to this new canvas.
