USITT Adds Makeup Lab at the 2018 Conference

The Makeup Lab is a new addition to USITT’s annual Conference. This makeup lab is presented by Cirque du Soleil’s, Randy Handley, Head of Wardrobe, Makeup, and Wigs – Michael Jackson ONE. In this 2-hour, hands-on class, 22 people will be taught the intricacies and specialized techniques used in Cirque productions. Spots for the free class are limited and will fill up quickly.

Westport Country Playhouse announces that in recognition of a $3 million gift from Howard J. Aibel of Weston, CT, the historic institution will name its entire campus “The Howard J. Aibel Theater Center at Westport Country Playhouse.” Westport recently staged a production of Evita as a part of its resident conservatory Broadway Method Academy. Where do babies come from? For Robert O'Hara's Mankind at Playwrights Horizons, they come from gold paint and lots (and lots) of foam; two 4'x8' sheets of foam, in fact. The finished prop was 14.6-ft. long and weighed in at 325 lbs! Check out this video of Props Artisan Patrice Escandon and Assistant Sculptor, Boyce Cummings creating the large baby for Mankind.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $25 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $25,000 to USITT for the 2019 United States Exhibition of the Prague Quadrennial.

In Memoriam: Mick Hughes, Lighting Designer

The Association of Lighting Designers in the UK reported that lighting designer and ALD Fellow Mick Hughes passed away on January 5, 2018 at the age of 79. Much admired for his simple, clean, and effective approach to lighting design Hughes had a long list of credits across nearly 50 years of work in UK Theatre collaborating with many high-profile directors, designers, and venues including Harold Pinter, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, the National Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, and the Royal Court Theatre.
