League of Professional Theatre Women Releases Findings of Second Annual Analysis

Jacob Coakley

The League of Professional Theatre Women’s newest study placed a deep focus on the hiring patterns of productions in a set of non-Broadway theatres for five consecutive seasons (2010-11 to 2014-2015). In addition to its findings about female playwrights and directors (around 30% and 35% representation, respectively), the study also delved into more backstage roles, finding that certain roles are overwhelmingly staffed by women (stage management, 70%; costume design 79%) while other roles, like lighting design, were overwhelmingly men. The highest one-year percentage of women lighting designers was only 16%, and six women alone accounted for 53% of all the lighting design credits that went to women during the study—a figure which speaks to the fact that not many women are being hired as lighting designers. More details about the study and a link to all their results after the jump.

Chauvet Brings Back to the Future Cake to Life

Jacob Coakley

I don’t normally post non-theatrical related things here, but this was too much fun not to include. For a recent Back to the Future day (10/21/2015) celebration in the UK, Tattooed Bakers created a life-sized DeLorean cake and then hired Vision SL to add appropriate lighting and effects to bring Doc Brown’s time-traveling hot rod to life. Vision SL used a variety of Chauvet Professional fixtures -- including Geyser RGB foggers for the exhaust, four COLORado Deco Quad 1 Tour  fixtures as front headlamps, two MegaStrobe FX12s for rear brake indicators and two COLORband PiX IP linear washes for bumper lights -- to make sure the cake was a hit.

Danish TV Station TV2OJ reports that the lighting company SGM has filed for bankruptcy. In a page on its Danish-language website, the site reports that the company has filed for bankruptcy and is under the curatorship of Christian Jul Madsen. Madsen is bullish in the article about SGM’s future, saying there are already bidders willing to buy the entire company. It is unclear if Peter Johansen—who founded Martin and brought SGM, originaly an Italian company, to Denmark where he operated as director of R&D—is still with the company. Also unclear was the employment of SGM’s 85 employees, who were sent home from work on Thursday “pending clarification” of their job status. More details on this as we have them.
