The Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association Releases Statement on Women+ in Sound Design for Broadway and Theatres Across the Country

Michael Eddy

It is with great excitement that the members of TSDCA congratulate the 10 nominated shows for the 2018 Tony Awards in Sound Design. Our membership is appreciative of the reinstatement of these awards, and we thank The American Theatre Wing for making this rectification. We also thank the theatre industry at large for their support of sound designers over the past few years in acknowledgement of our contribution to Broadway theatre.

LA Opera Embraces LED Lighting for Rigoletto Designed by Robert Wierzel

Stage Directions

The Los Angeles Opera has invested in Signify's LED-based Philips Vari-Lite VLZ Profile fixtures as part of its stage lighting rig. LA Opera's current production of Verdi's Rigoletto, with lighting design by Robert Wierzel, is the first production in its history lit with a predominantly LED lighting rig. [Editor’s Note: Signify became the new company name of Philips Lighting as of May 16, 2018.] The LA Opera staging of Rigolleto was directed by Mark Lamos and features striking scenic perspectives by scenic designer, Michael Yeargan and elaborate period costumes from costume designer, Constance Hoffman along with Wierzel's vivid lighting. Here's a video from LA Opera showing off the creative team's work.

Rio Grande Theatre Upgrades its Lighting Working with Hubbard’s Music

Stage Directions

The Rio Grande Theatre, in Las Cruces, NM, opened on July 29, 1926, as a silent movie hall. The two-story building was retrofitted three years later with sound equipment, making it among the earliest theatres in its state to show “talkies.” It was also the first business in Las Cruces to be air conditioned. History repeated itself earlier this year, when the iconic venue, which now hosts a diverse mix of theatrical productions, concerts, and special film showings, took a technological step forward by replacing its old stage lighting with a new LED lighting system.

Barbizon Welcomed Fellows from the Theatrical Workplace Development Program

Tom Madden

Here's a post from Tom Madden, President & CEO of Barbizon Lighting.
On May 30, we were thrilled to welcome 17 fellows from
Roundabout Theatre Company'sTheatrical Workplace Development Program to Barbizon Lighting Company’s NYC Office today! We toured the facilities and had workshops with some cool lighting tech as we talk about Systems Integration and Project Management job opportunities. We hope that we provided insight into the very cool non-theatrical work that we do with our theatrical production backgrounds. This is a great program established by Roundabout and we are thankful for the opportunity to be their partner.

Jagged Little Pill at American Repertory Theater Features a Sound Design by Jonathan Deans

Stage Directions

A daring stage production inspired by Alanis Morissette’s iconic album Jagged Little Pill, which premiered in May at the American Repertory Theater’s Loeb Drama Center, has pushed the limits of immersive sound design in a musical drama that moves seamlessly between interior intimacy and arena-sized intensity. To accomplish this daunting task, the production relied on eminent sound designer Jonathan Deans — a pioneer in immersive audio technologies.
