Rose Brand Offers $10,000 Main Stage Curtain as Prize in Rags to Riches Video Contest

Rose Brand launched a new competition, The Rags to Riches video contest, that challenges theatres to create a short video (under 1 minute) explaining why their stage is most deserving of a new curtain. Videos will be featured on the Rose Brand Pinterest and Vimeo pages and the one with the best combination of creativity and entertainment (as judged by Rose Brand) along with likes, shares and organizational need will win a new main curtain worth up to $10,000 for their theatre. The deadline is Nov. 7, 2014.

Tait and Stage Technologies Move Into New Las Vegas Home

Tait and sister company Stage Technologies have moved into a new joint location in Las Vegas on Wynn Road. The new space includes 30,000 square feet of workshop space, seven loading docks and a full ground-supported test stand and will accommodate work for west coast theatre, casino and theme park clients. Other features of the location include all utilities and systems for testing and system configurations for these projects. In addition to functioning as Tait’s west coast permanent installation hub, the onsite team will handle operations, local show service and support, project management and administration.

Robe Robin Series Lights This Is Brazil at Edinburgh Fringe

Robe moving lights lit up The Pleasance venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with Pointes, 600E Spots, MMX Spots, MMX WashBeams, MMX Blades and LEDWash 600s working in the 23 pop-up venues operated by The Pleasance. Matt Britten, Pleasance technical operations manager and Dom Knight, Pleasance Edinburgh head of lighting chose the Robe fixtures, which were supplied by Black Light, a sales, rental and installation specialist based in Edinburgh. One of the bigger shows for The Pleasance was This Is Brazil, which took place in the Pleasance Grand, a 750-seat theatre, and featured 10 LEDWash 600s, six MMX Blades and six MMX WashBeams all from Robe’s ROBIN series, which were used extensively throughout the show to help create atmosphere and add color and striking effects.

Ashly Audio Powers Our Lady of Lourdes Academy’s Multipurpose Gymnasium

Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami, Fla. recently spent $15 million on renovations to their school, including a multi-purpose gym that will hold classes, assemblies and performances in addition to athletic activities. Revelation Sound, Inc. (RSI), an A/V specialty electrical and integration firm, was awarded the contract for the audio, video and intercom portion of the project. The project team placed a huge priority on ease of use to handle all these needs easily at the school, so Revelation Sound chose Ashly Audio KLR-series amplifiers and an 8 x 8 Ashly ne8800 networked audio processor.

Yamaha Audioversity Brings Live Sound Reinforcement Program to Chicago

Yamaha Audioversity will focus on sound reinforcement/live sound in Chicago with three days of classes November 3-5. Day 1 will focus on digital mixing consoles for sound (featuring CL and QL series consoles); Day 2 will cover digital audio networking (fundamentals in the context of a common home network, and expand into features required for full scale Dante network provisioning and configurations) and Day 3 dives into speaker systems (with new Nexo and STM products). Attendees will be eligible to receive CTS credits for each of the three-day sessions.

Philips Selecon and Vari-Lite Fixtures Make Edinburgh Fringe Festival Debut

The Philips Selecon  Rama LED Fresnel and Vari-Lite VLX Wash were new additions to the lighting rig at the C South venue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Rama LED Fresnel luminaires took care of the warm and cool Front of House wash light two VLX Wash luminaires were installed as key light FOH with two additional luminaires providing back key light. Owen Horton, theatre manager at C south, praised both luminaire’s “beautiful dimming curves” that “dim all the way down to zero without a bump at the bottom.”

Licht-Technik Vertriebs’ range of motorized yokes and barndoors, color changers and dimmer shutters will complement Robert Juliat’s fixtures in new fixtures aimed at theatre and studio installations.

Philips to Split Off Lighting Business

Reuters is reporting that the 120-year-old Philips company that owns such lighting brands as Color Kinetics, Selecon, Strand Lighting and Vari-Lite is planning to break its company in two, spinning off its lighting business into a new company. According to Reuters “the new structure would bring cost savings of 100 million euros (128.46 million US dollar) next year and a further 200 million euros in 2016.” The article quotes chief executive Frans van Houten saying “I do appreciate the magnitude of the decision we are taking, but the time is right to take the next strategic step for Philips.” Stage Directions has reached out to Philips and will update this story as more info becomes available.
