The Judy Dearing Design Competition is now Accepting Applications

The Black Theatre Network announces that they are accepting applications for The Judy Dearing Design Competition. The Black Theatre Network (BTN) established this award, which covers theatrical scenic, costume, and lighting design, in 1996 in honor of pioneering costume designer, Judy Dearing. The awards were created to encourage African American students focused on elements of theatrical design. The awards are presented every other year with the other major awards. All entries will be evaluated by a professional design panel.

Lighting Designer Mark Stanley’s light plot for the New York City Ballet’s premier of Something to Dance About, Jerome Robbins, Broadway at the Ballet, contained a number of the Chroma-Q® Color Force II™ LED battens. “I could never have done all those scenes, and been specific to them, with traditional three-color ground rows,” Stanley says, “The Color Force IIs gave me flexibility and range.”

At the Blackpool Grand this year, putting both beauty and some beast attitude into the show, lighting designer Andy Webb specified 81 Robe fixtures – 98 per cent of them LED sources – for a brand-new version of the classic tale produced by UK Productions for the 2018-19 season.

After the fire that burned down the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre in Stratford, CT, Sunday morning, January 13, Sara Holdren, the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Academy @ Stratford released the following statement about the fire and their future.

In the early hours of the morning on Sunday, January 13, the historic Stratford Festival Theater caught fire and was ultimately destroyed by the blaze. We at SA@S are deeply saddened by the loss of this wonderful historic space — and we want to make clear that our program is alive and well.

American Legion, Post 43 in Hollywood Upgrades its Audio

Stage Directions

Founded in 1919 by First World War veterans working in the motion picture industry, the American Legion’s Post 43 became a Hollywood icon, with members including Clark Gable, Charlton Heston, Mickey Rooney, Ronald Reagan and more. In recent years membership of both Post 43 and the Legion in general has declined, but a major project to update the post’s auditorium is putting it back at the center of the Los Angeles community. Alcons Audio auditioned and was chosen for the starring role.
