CHICAGO—Two collaborations between artists of color and cultural organizations in Chicago have each won $50,000 from The Joyce Foundation's annual Joyce Awards competition.The Free Street Theater will commission a new play, Meet Juan(ito) Doe, from playwright Ricardo Gamboa, and Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music will commission Quantum Music/Englewood from celebrated saxophonist and composer, Ernest Dawkins, and accomplished percussionist and sitar player, Rahul Sharma. Gypsy of the Year Raises $4,492,636

NEW YORK — The 28th annual Gypsy of the Year competition (#GypsyOfTheYear) — which celebrated six weeks of dedicated fundraising from 55 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring companies — raised $4,492,636 for Broadway Cares. The grand total was announced Tuesday by Tony Award winners Cynthia Erivo (The Color Purple) and Jessie Mueller (Waitress) and Hamilton star Javier Muñoz following two incredible days of performances. Theatre Bay Area Announces 2016 TBA Awards Recipients

SAN FRANCISCO — Theatre Bay Area celebrated theatre and its practitioners at the 2016 TBA Awards Monday, Dec. 5  at A.C.T.’s Geary Theater. This year, 75 awards were given to recipients out of a pool of over 372 finalists, generated by over 300 adjudicators who cast ballots for over 281 productions at 96 companies across three tiers based on operating budget and use of Actors’ Equity Association (union) talent. Ambassador Theatre Group Closes Lyric to Prepare for Potter

NEW YORK — The Ambassador Theatre Group will close their Lyric Theatre on West 42nd Street for renovations that will make it a better home for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. ATG announced the closure, and Deadline.com confirmed that the renovations would be in service of making it a home for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in 2018. The theatre’s current production — “Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour” — will close in April. The plan currently is that “Paramour” will move into another theatre. Add a comment

NEW HAVEN, CT — Yale tapped Tarell Alvin McCraney as the chair of the Department of Playwriting at Yale School of Drama, effective July 1, 2017, for a three-year term. McCraney will begin his work part-time this winter in order to admit the incoming class of playwrights.
