Brian Eugenio Herrara and Chris Jones Honored for Theatre Criticism

The George Jean Nathan Award Committee (comprised of professors from Cornell, Princeton and Yale) awarded Brian Eugenio Herrara and Chris Jones with the 2014-2015 prize for their drama criticism. Herrera received the award for his book Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth-Century U.S. Popular Performance, while Jones was recognized for his work as theatre critic for the Chicago Tribune.

Ten Finalists Named in Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize Contest

Out of more than 200 submissions, Center Theatre Group has named the 10 finalists for their first Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize. The winners and runners-up will be announced Jan. 11 and will be developed with CTG’s literary staff and presented as staged readings in February. The winning playwright will receive $5000, with an additional $5000 given to a southern California theatre to produce the show.

Goodspeed Musicals Announces Writers for 2016 Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony

A total of 36 writers, representing 19 new musicals, will head to the 2016 Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals in January. The Colony is a four-week sanctuary for composers, lyricists, and librettists to embark on new musical theatre work or to devote a substantial amount of time to a work-in-progress in an environment rich with creative energy. Each team will live and work in their own house, with whatever support is needed, from dramaturgical to the Goodspeed’s music department. In the evenings writers get together in an informal, salon-style environment and share the day’s work.

Theatre Bay Area Names 2015 Awards Winners

The Theatre Bay Awards celebration took place Monday, Nov. 16 at American Conservatory Theatre’s Geary Theatre, honoring the best of more than 300 productions from 87 theatre companies in the Bay Area. In addition to the awards for productions, several individual awards were given out, including the Charles Dean Award, which was presented to award-winning actor, director, playwright and educator Margo Hall. The Charles Dean Award recognizes a Bay Area actor who has dedicated his or her career to Bay Area theatre.
