The 2018 Helen Hayes Awards, presented by theatreWashington, were announced on May 14, 2018 at the 34th annual ceremony at The Anthem. One of the country’s most prestigious cultural honors, The Helen Hayes Awards recognizes and celebrates excellence in professional theatre throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area in 47 categories, plus the 2018 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company, which was given to Monumental Theatre Company, and honored Nancy Robinette, the recipient of The 2018 Helen Hayes Tribute. The event was co-hosted by Michael J. Bobbitt and Alyssa Wilmoth Keegan. Stage Directions congratulates both the nominees and the award recipients. The distinction between a Helen production and a Hayes production:
The Helen Group of Awards are for non-Equity productions defined to be those that have no more than three equity actors or the equity actors make up less than 51% of the cast. The Hayes Group of Awards are for productions employing too many equity actors to qualify for the Helen Group.
