Dad’s Garage Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Finance New Home

by Jacob Coakley

Dad’s Garage launched a “Help Build the House of Dad’s” Kickstarter campaign to finance their new home at 569 Ezzard St. in the Old Fourth Ward of Atlanta. The full cost of the building is roughly $2 million, and after a successful capital campaign, Dad’s Garage is turning to Kickstarter to raise $100,000 in the next two months to put them over the top so they can close on the property in December.

Dad’s Garage launches Kickstarter campaign,
releases plan for financing new home

This past Friday afternoon, Dad’s Garage Theatre Company launched a Kickstarter campaign entitled “Help Build the House of Dad’s!” with the goal of raising $116,000 from the public to put toward the purchase of their new home. This past July, after being homeless for over a year, Dad’s Garage announced that they were under contract on the church at 569 Ezzard St. in the Old Fourth Ward. After rolling up their sleeves, conducting a feasibility study, and launching a capital campaign with the assistance of Coxe Curry, the 19 year-old non-profit theatre company has taken their funding needs public. Details about the full plan can be found on their Kickstarter page  but of the roughly two million dollar price tag on the building, Dad’s Garage needs fans and supporters to come through with about $100,000 (after Kickstarter expenses) in the next two months in order for them to close on the property this December. The remainder of the funds are slated to be covered by bank financing, corporate sponsors, private donors, community leaders, and foundation support.

And, of course, in true Dad’s Garage fashion, you’re right to expect a bunch of ridiculous benefits for donating! In addition to traditional items like tickets to shows and musical downloads, they’re offering all sorts of fun things like custom tee shirts designed by R. LAND and original artwork, not to mention some really crazy stuff at a higher premium – like naming a toilet in the new building after your mortal enemy, an improviser breaking up with your romantic partner for you, or tattooing whatever you like on an ensemble member’s tookus.

Dad’s Garage is also planning several events to raise awareness (and funds) during the campaign’s 60-day stretch including a pizza night at neighboring Ammazza, karaoke night at Sister Louisa’s Church, a scavenger hunt with King of Pops, the Little Five Points Halloween Parade, and a Weekend of Improv with Fred Willard at 7 Stages.
