Space 55 Theatre Ensemble Named as a Winner of Phoenix Mayor's Arts Award

(PHOENIX, ARIZ)Space 55 Theatre Ensemble is pleased to announce that it has been named a winner of an esteemed 2014 Mayor's Arts Award. Space 55 was named in the category of Theatre Organization.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton launched the awards in 2012 to highlight the cultural richness of Phoenix. The Awards serve to identify outstanding leaders in six areas: Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, Dance, Public Art, and Creative Writing. Nominees are chosen based on the criteria of innovation, impact and integration.

Winners were selected from more than 250 nominations by a panel of distinguished members from the arts and culture community.

"Space 55 is honored to be recognized with such a remarkable award," said Shawna Franks, Space 55's founding Producing Artistic Director. "Our talented ensemble has always been privileged to bring compelling and cutting-edge theatre to life. It is marvelous that our peers and the City of Phoenix have come to agree with our audiences."

Charlie Steak, Associate Artistic Director, agreed.

"Since 2006, Space 55 has been committed to producing new and innovative theatre. We're one of the few places in Phoenix where you can see relevant, often jaw-dropping work in such a casual and affordable environment.  Our community of writers and actors is extremely honored to receive the Mayor's Arts Award."

Space 55 Board Chair Ben Kaplan urged audience members to see for themselves the quality of Space 55 theatre.

"The theatre remains dedicated to local, bold and vibrant modern works," Kaplan said. "The 2014-15 season is no exception. We hope people come by to see what emerges from a small space that is helping to transform Phoenix."
