Christopher Ashley Named Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse

SAN DIEGO, CA — The La Jolla Playhouse has appointed Christopher Ashley artistic director. Des McAnuff, who held the position previously, will shift to a newly created position known as Playhouse director emeritus.

McAnuff will move on to become an artistic director at the Stratford Festival in Canada. Ashley will serve in an interim capacity until September 30, and will begin full time in October.

Ashley is currently directing the new musical version of Xanadu, which is set to open on June 26. He received a 2001 Tony Award nomination for The Rocky Horror Show. He has received a Drama Desk Award nomination and the OBIE and Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Director.
