Stage Directions • Industry News • September 29, 2020

Jesus Christ Superstar: The Concert recently wrapped its run at London’s Regents Park Open Air Theatre. This socially distanced show is equipped with Shure Axient Digital wireless and plenty of the ADX1M micro bodypack transmitters. Hear from Technical Director, Andy Beardmore and Sound Designer, Nick Lidster about working on this project produced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Open Air Theatre was reopened with Jesus Christ Superstar: The Concert on August 14 and ran until September 27, 2020. With social distancing, seating capacity was reduced to 390 seats (down from 1,256), and with many changes needed to operate in order to keep everyone safe and to comply with government guidance. With one of the largest auditoria in London, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is the oldest, professional, permanent outdoor theatre in Britain.

This special concert staging of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, was created by the team behind the production, which played two sell-out runs at the Open Air Theatre (2016/2017), at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (2018), and 60 dates at the Barbican Theatre (2019), before embarking on an ongoing three year North American tour. With nine performances a week, the roles of Jesus, Judas, and Mary were double cast, giving audiences the opportunity to see any combination of actors as they alternated performances.

The Creative and Production Team included:
Director, Timothy Sheader; Lighting Designer, Lee Curran; Sound Designer, Nick Lidster for Autograph; Set & Costume Designer, Tom Scutt; Fight Director, Kate Waters; Company Stage Manager, Graham Michael; Deputy Stage Manager, Ian Andlaw; Assistant Stage Manager & Book Cover, Nicki Barry; Production Manager, Andy Beardmore; Props Supervisor, Lizzie Frankl; Costume Supervisor, Poppy Hall; and Hair & Make up Supervisor, Jess Plews.
