On Friday, September 7, the Public Theater will host the 2012 NYC Props Summit. Spearheaded by Jay Duckworth, props master at the Public, the Summit will bring together dozens of props artisans from New York City and the greater Northeast area for an evening of networking, learning and recognition. Jay Duckworth will be tweeting throughout the event on the Stage Directions twitter account (@stagedirections) and conversation from and about the Summit will be organized around the #propsummit hashtag. The Summit is free to all prop masters, artisans, sculptors and others in the field. It will take place from 6:30-10 p.m. in the props shop at the Public’s Lafayette St. headquarters.
“I started the summit 4 years ago as a way to meet new carpenters and artisans in NYC and put faces to the names I saw at the bottom of emails,” said Duckworth. “My goal was to start a network of props people helping out props people.”
In addition to networking, planned events at the 2012 Props Summit include a talk by Rick Washburn, president of The Specialists (originally The Weapons Specialists), an opportunity for interns who have recently completed their service at theatres to show off their portfolios and receive feedback, as well as an informational session when props personnel can share information about new products, ask for advice and plot out production overlaps to share best practices about common props.
