Stage Directions • Theatre Buzz • September 10, 2019

Judith Bowden’s set design for The Shaw Festival’s Sweeney Todd, in their 2016 season, was certainly one to recall. Here David Edwards (Head of Scenic Construction), Gwyneth Stark (Head of Scenic Art) and Wayne Reierson (Head of Properties) talk about the set, scenic art, and the props for this production of Sweeney Todd.

For this production of Sweeney Todd at the Shaw Festival, Judith Bowden’s set and costumes, based on striking images of industrial London, and lighting design by Alan Brodie created a visually haunting continuum between the dimly lit ambiance of 19th-century and contemporary London. Musical director Paul Sportelli conducted the brilliantly complex musical score and sound design by John Lott completed the Fleet Street soundscape.
