Stage Directions • Theatre Buzz • October 9, 2020

The Andrew Lloyd Webber YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On! will be streaming, starting October 9th, an encore presentation of The Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall. The Webber musical is celebrating its 34th birthday and was streamed back in April at the start of the pandemic. Here’s a trailer for this broadcast of The Phantom of the Opera:

The stream goes live at 2:00 p.m. EDT/11:00 AM PDT and is be available for 48 hours on YouTube. While free to watch, donations are encouraged with proceeds going to Broadway Cares, Acting for Others, and more charities supporting those suffering from the theater shutdown due to COVID-19.

In 2011, to celebrate the musical’s 25th anniversary, Cameron Mackintosh produced this large-scale staging of the musical. It stars Ramin Karimloo as The Phantom, Sierra Boggess at Christine Daae, and Hadley Fraser as Raoul. The production at the Royal Albert Hall features a cast and orchestra of over 200.

The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall was designed by Matt Kinley, inspired by Maria Björnson’s original design. Lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe and Andrew Bridge, and sound design by Mick Potter.

The series continues with Alfie Boe Live – The Bring Him Home Tour (October 16), and Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of The Worlds: Alive on Stage! (October 23).
