Hauptman to Leave SSDC

NEW YORK — Barbara Hauptman has stated that she will not continue in her current position as executive director of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers when her contract expires in November. Hauptman has been with the union since 1995.

Hauptman and the SSDC made news last year when they drew press attention to legal wranglings between the Broadway collaborators of Urinetown and producers of two regional incarnations accused of replicating the Broadway staging. The situation has yet to reach its conclusion.

Hauptman has indicated that she hopes such actions will lead to a system whereby staging and choreography can be copyrighted, then licensed out for pay to regional productions, just as text and music are.

Hauptman has no set plans post-SSDC, but teaching could be one possibility.
