IATSE Celebrates its 125th Anniversary

On July 17, 1893, representatives from New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Denver, Philadelphia, Syracuse, Buffalo and Boston, came together at the Elks Hall, located at 27th Street and Broadway in New York City and founded The National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes (NATSE). In 1902, The NATSE becomes the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

“In Witness Whereof, we have ordered the seal of the ALLIANCE to be affixed this Seventeenth day of July A.D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety Three.” The founding Locals included: IATSE Local One (NYC); IATSE Local 2 (Chicago); IATSE Local 3 (Pittsburgh); IATSE Local 4 (Brooklyn); IATSE Local 5, (Cincinnati); IATSE Local 6 (St. Louis); IATSE Local 7 (Denver); IATSE Local 8 (Philadelphia) IATSE Local 9 (Syracuse); IATSE Local 10 (Buffalo); and IATSE Local 11 (Boston).

   The Elks Hall occupied the first floor of this building, located at 27th Street and Broadway, New York City, and it was here that the first Alliance Convention was held on July 17, 1893.  The original charter of The National Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees
