Theater Critic, John Simon

The theater critic John Simon died on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at the age of 94. Simon was the theater critic at New York magazine for 36 years from October 1968 until May 2005. He then wrote theater reviews for Bloomberg News from June 2005 through November 2010. He also reviewed theater for The Westchester Guardian. Simon died at Westchester Medical Center. At the time of his death, he lived in Manhattan with second wife, Patricia Hoag-Simon.

In addition to his work with New York and Bloomberg News, Simon penned theater, film, music, and book reviews for publications such as Esquire, The Hudson Review, National Review, Opera News, The New Leader, Commonweal, The New Criterion and The New York Times Book Review. He attended the Horace Mann School and earned a BA, MA, and PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. Simon received the George Jean Nathan Award (1970) and the George Polk Award for Film Criticism (1968).

He had a biting acerbic wit and was loved and vilified in equal numbers. Requiescat in Pace, John Simon.
