Stage Directions • Theatre Buzz • December 27, 2019

Jerry Herman at the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors

The great Broadway composer-lyricist, Jerry Herman died on Thursday at the age of 88. His iconic contributions to the Broadway stage and musical theatre include Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles. His work was at times  considered old-fashioned but his show tunes continue to be among the most loved and well know works of musical theatre. Time has proven that Herman’s musical joy and his works’ celebration of life is still not out of fashion. A Tony and Grammy award-winner, he was also inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1986. Herman also received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in 2009 and in 2010 a Drama Desk Special Award “for enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century.” He was among the honorees at the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors in a wonderful musical tribute you can see below. Followed by the link to the complete NY Times obituary for Mr. Herman.
