S*P*A*Minar | Props Adjacent Careers in Film, TV, and Trades with Larry Heyman, Sunday, Jan. 17

Stage Directions • Industry NewsTheatre Buzz • January 12, 2021

It’s a new year, which kicks off with a new S*P*A*Minar from The Society of Properties Artisan Managers (S*P*A*M). S*P*A*Minars are their monthly webinar series on all things props. On Sunday, January 17th at 8:00 p.m. EST, Larry Heyman, S*P*A*M Member, an Associate Professor in Properties Design and Fabrication in the OCU School of Theatre, and a Lecturer in the design program in the OCU School of Theatre, will lead an incredibly important discussion—Props Adjacent Careers in Film, TV, and Trades. This will be a great discussion for all levels of prop makers, from recent graduates wondering what they’ll do with that hard earned degree in this new COVID theater economy to experienced professionals who have found themselves sidelined from their previously secure theater gigs.

Heyman is uniquely positioned to lead us in this S*P*A*Minar, as he has applied his prop expertise across all different industries from regional and educational theater to film and TV to trade shows. In addition to working in the props departments at The LaJolla Playhouse, The Goodman Theatre, The Huntington Theatre, and the Utah Shakespearean Festival, he has worked as a freelance set decorator, set dresser and greens man on many feature films including The Crucible, To Jillian on her 37th Birthday, Rushmore, Hope Floats, Varsity Blues, Miss Congeniality, King of the World: The Muhammad Ali Story, Home Before Dark, The Way She Moves and Pearl Harbor. His work has also been seen in the art departments of trade shows for Mercedes Benz USA, and Toyota.

They are once again requesting pay-what-you-can donations to support this S*P*A*Minar programming. All money collected will be used to offset webinar operation costs with additional funds going to our annual grant program for early career prop people. Suggested donation amount is $3.

Donations can be made via PayPal Money Pool here: https://bit.ly/SPAMinarMoneyPool

Registration will remain open until 6:00 p.m. EST on January 17th and a link to the Zoom S*P*A*Minar session will be sent out to all registered attendees one hour before the start of the webinar.

All S*P*A*Minars will be recorded and video will be shared here the week following the event.
